About the University
Tianjin University of Sport (TUS) was founded in August 1958. Currently, TUS offers 15 undergraduate specialties covering pedagogy, science, management, literature and art. The university was authorized to confer PhD degree in 2013 which completes its “Bachelor-Master-Doctor” system of talent cultivation. Look into the future, TUS, with 466 staff and more than 6,000 students, will in accordance with its motto of “self-cultivation and self-discipline” to advance rapidly and efficiently and stay focused on the primary task of working together with full confidence to build a first-class, high-level and characteristic modern prestigious sport university in China and striving to catch the attention of the world!
Discipline Development
Tianjin University of Sport has always adhered to the leading role of discipline construction, laid emphasize on its planning, and striven hard to raise its standard and core competitiveness. Exercise Science and Humanities and Social Sciences of Sports have always been the Key Discipline of Tianjin. In 2011, Sport Science was approved as “The 12thFive-Year Plan of Tianjin Higher Education Comprehensive Investment and Planning Discipline”.
After years of development, the university became “Approved Institute of Doctoral Degree" in July 2013, and at the same time, Sport Science was authorized to confer doctoral degree; in 2012, TUS won the 5thprize, ranking top 10% in Sport Science in the 3rdround National Discipline Evaluation.
Scientific Study of Sports
With the improvement of its scientific research ability, TUS has undertook 185 national-level, provincial-level and bureau-level scientific research projects in recent years, among them, there are 2 National Sci-Tech Support Project, one National Natural Science Foundation Project for Key International Collaborative Research, 19 National Natural Science Foundation Projects, and 21 National Social Science Foundation Projects; with 28 research findings received provincial-level award, and 150 works and teaching works and more than 1,700 academic papers were published, with over 30 papers have been collected by SCI, SSCI, EI and ISTP (4 of them in JCR).
The university boasts its high-level research institutes, including Key Research Center of Sport Social Science, Key Lab of Psychological and Physiological Regulation in Sport, Research Center of Sport Culture, Tianjin Municipal Research Center of Physical Education, and Tianjin Municipal Key Lab of Exercise Physiology and Sports Medicine, etc.
Journal of Tianjin University of Sports has long been the Chinese core journals on sport, it has also long been used as a resource publication by 12 searching organizations at home and abroad, including the Chemical Abstracts in America, AJ in Russia, Cambridge Science Abstracts in America, Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index and the Chinese Qualified Database of Social Sciences, etc.
Specialty & Program
Tianjin University of Sport comprises 15 bachelor’s degree programs, namely, Physical Education; Guidance and Management of Social Sports; Sports Training; Martial Arts and Traditional Sports; Exercise Science; Rehabilitation and Health; Educational Technology; Special Education; Journalism; English; Applied Psychology; Marketing; Tourism Management; Management of Public affairs and Dancing. Among them, there are 3 National-level Characteristic Specialty Constructing Programs, 8 Tianjin Brand Specialties, 2 Tianjin Strategic Emerging Industry Specialties and 2 Tianjin Pilot Programs for Comprehensive Reformation.
Staff & Faculty
Among the 466 faculties, there are 289 full-time teachers, including 51 professors and 85 associate professors. Moreover, 71 of them possess doctoral degree and 146 of them possess master degree. Besides, there are 6 doctoral supervisors and more than 120 master supervisors; one teacher was granted the title of “National Famous Teacher” and one group was granted the title of “National Excellent Teaching Team”; and one teacher was granted the title of “Tianjin Famous Teacher”, and 3 groups were granted the title of “Tianjin Excellent Teaching Team”.
Talent Cultivation
Have constantly stuck to the central role of promoting student cultivation quality and continuously kept on strengthening the central status of improving teaching quality, TUS has gained a number of symbolic achievements in advancing institutional construction and built up a complete system for teaching management and evaluation. In recent years, the university won one first prize of “National Teaching Achievement”, 4 “National-level Top-grade Course” and 8 prizes of “Teaching Achievement” from General Administration of Sport of China and Tianjin local municipal government, besides, nearly ten thousands sport teachers and coaches and thousands of sport management and research talents were graduated from Tianjin University of Sport.
Competitive Sports
The university persists in strengthening its own characteristics and focuses on bringing the advantage into full play, particularly in baseball, soft tennis, Chinese-style wrestling, and rattan ball and so on. It has trained a large number of excellent coaches and top athletes for the country who have achieved outstanding results in important international and national sport events, such as Paralympics Games, Asian Games, National Games and Olympic Games.
Since 2009, TUS has organized and established Tianjin Badminton Team, Rowing Team and Rugby Team authorized by Tianjin Sport Bureau, taking task of competing in National Games; especially in the 12thNational Games, Chen Jianxin, alumnus of 2010, won the champion of Men’s 400 Meters Race, the only gold medal in Track and Field for Tianjin Delegation.
TUS is making great strides in developing new-emerging sports and constantly kept exploring a new way to cultivate high-level and high-quality athletes through the combination of sport and education, and endeavors to make greater contribution to Tianjin and the country.
International Exchange
Adherence to its opening up policy to outside world, updating conception of school-running and active in international exchanges, TUS has established friendly relations among universities in the United States, Britain, Australia, South Korea, Japan and Vietnam, etc, to make great effort to advance interactions between teachers and students which serve for education, research and competition, with the influence and reputation at home and abroad have both been promoted. Over years, the university invited a great number of foreign famous experts and scholars to lecture and carry out scientific research and cooperation, learning from foreign advanced teaching management experience and academic achievement, which will play an active role in building itself a prestigious sport university in China. In May 2013, Tianjin International Students Martial Arts Cultural Experience Base, serving as an excellent platform for foreign students to learn Chinese Kongfu, was established in the university.
Stadium and Gymnasium Facilities
The university covers an area of 534 acres (356,018 square meters), with 12 teaching and training facilities, i.e. multi-functional gymnasium, track and field stadium, basketball stadium, volleyball stadium, natatorium, and dancing hall; and 20 outdoor fields such as international standard plastic track and field, football ground and baseball court with light.
New Campus
TUS will move to the new campus in July 2015. According to the “12thFive-year Plan of Tianjin National Economic and Social Development”, the new campus has been brought into the “Construction Plan of Tianjin Health Industry Park”, which located in Tuanbo New District of Jinghai County and covering 1115.7 acres, with total investment of 4.7 billion RMB, planning to build 458,900 square meters of various school infrastructures. It will be a green, ecological, environmental and energy-saving campus, and the construction of new campus aims at giving impetus to not only the future development of TUS but also the sport industry in Tianjin and making great contribution to the nationwide fitness campaign by laying a solid material foundation along with expansion in the scope of institutions and improvement in teaching quality.
